It was expected that much of the Sox offense would come from the outfield with Carlos Quentin coming off a 21 homer, 87 RBI season and Alex Rios going .284 with 21 homers and 88 RBIs in 2010. Team them with leadoff hitter Juan Pierre, coming off a season where he lead the Majors with 68 Stolen Bases, and the outfield was looking solid.
At the start of the season things looked bleak for the outfield as even though Quentin was holding up his end of the offense Pierre and Rios looked to be dropping the ball. Both looked horrible on defense as Pierre’s glove cost the Sox a few games and Rios opened the season with a .163 average and 1 homer over the first month.
Pierre began to pick it up in July
The Sox outfield looks to be crowded for next year with returning outfielders Alex Rios and Carlos Quentin and minor leaguer Alejandro De Aza and Dayan Viciedo. Both De Aza and Viciedo were both called up during the season and went .322 and .255, respectively and looked very solid, both offensively and defensively. A place for Viciedo needs to be found for 2012 as the most highly touted prospect in quite sometime.
