The 2011 MLB draft is coming up in less than a week and we are starting to see who the Cubs will draft. Below are the names that we might hear when the Cubs make their selection with the 9th pick of the draft:
Bubba Starling – RHP/CF – Gardner High School (KS) Almost all mock drafts thus far have us taking the 6 foot 5 inch righty out of Kansas. Bubba is a two sport start who is already signed on as a quarterback at the University of Nebraska. Drafting Bubba will have a risk, but I do not think it’s a large risk. I think that the Cubs will be able to give him a deal to keep him away from football. The bright side to drafting him and him not signing would be the Cubs would get to keep this position in next years draft as well and with how they are playing the Cubs would have two picks within the top 10 of the 2012 draft.
Sonny Gray – RHP – Vanderbilt The Cubs already drafted Sonny once back in 2008 but he decided to go to college and pitch for the Commodores. It was wildly known that Sonny wasn’t going to sign with the Cubs, but the Cubs took a gamble on him in the 27th round hoping when money was finally put in front of his face he would take the bait. Unfortunately he didn’t and now 3 years later he is considered to be a lock for a top 15 pick.
George Springer – OF – Connecticut Springer is a junior at the University of Connecticut and could be a pick for the Cubs. Springer is one of the top position players in a very pitcher heavy top of the draft board. Springer should be available for the Cubs and if Bubba is taken ahead of him I think this would be a very solid pick for the Cubs.
Then again this is Wilken we are talking about and last year he took Hayden Simpson out of no where, and has taken other first round surprises like Andrew Cashner and Tyler Colvin in the last few years. Wilken isn’t conventional when it comes to the draft, but he certainly produces, and hopefully will this year as well.
