The Chicago Bears selected center James Daniels, a junior, out of Iowa with their second round pick Friday night. Daniels, who is 6-foot-3, 306-LBs, was considered to be one of the best interior linemen prospects of the draft.
His athleticism makes him a terrific interior zone-blocker, and has fluidity to play both center or guard. He was projected as a first to second round talent and is deemed to be a day one starting prospect.
Selecting Daniels means that the Bears will now have former center Cody Whitehair play and start at guard. The interior starting line of the Bears projects to have Kyle Long, Daniels, and Whitehair with tackles Bobby Massie and Charles Leno Jr. on the outside. With new head coach Matt Nagy’s offense, the offensive line needs to feature large, but athletic offensive linemen.
Daniels should be ready to go when the season starts as he will be coached up by new offensive line coach Harry Hiestand who is regarded as the best offensive line coach. Hiestand oversaw two Notre Dame linemen that were drafted in the top ten of last night’s first round.
