The Chicago Bears have selected linebacker Roquan Smith out of Georgia with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Smith was regarded as the best linebacker prospect available in this year’s draft.
He was the 2017 Butkus award winner, the award is given to the best collegiate linebacker each season. Smith is 6-foot-1 and 225-pounds. Many believe that Smith is the most polished and readied college prospect in this year’s draft and is a seen as a day one starter due to his high instinct and ability to diagnose plays.
Smith will most likely line up at the inside linebacker position for the Bears along side veteran Danny Trevathan and will provide the team a solid tackler against the run. Smith’s style of play has led many to compare his potential to that of former All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis who played for current Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
With Fangio’s defensive coaching staff, Smith has the possibility of being a high-end producer in the Bears defense.
