Shaq Thompson, Linebacker

Improving the line was a clear focus for Chicago as they look to get back on track defensively. However, even with Tremaine Edmunds EJ Edwards, the Bears cannot forget about the linebacker position. The team opted to not tender Jack Sanborn, leaving plenty of snaps up for grabs.
Veteran Shaq Thompson might not be the sexiest of names, but he could be a valuable resource in replacing Sanborn. He has spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, appearing in 123 games. Thompson has made 752 tackles, 12 sacks, 26 pass breakups and three interceptions.
Injuries have severely limited him over the past two years, as he has appeared in just six games. However, when healthy, Thompson earned a 73.2 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus in 2024, ranking 48/189 linebackers. Assuming he is past his injuries, Thompson gives the Bears some extra protection over the middle of the field.
He also gives Chicago another valuable vocal leader next to Grady Jarrett. Thompson won’t cost as much, but he can help building the new culture for Ben Johnson’s Bears.
