Erik Ezukanma, Texas Tech
While some hidden gems have been unearthed in this draft class (see Christian Watson), one that hasn’t received as much hype lately is Texas Tech’s Erik Ezukanma. After breaking his arm in spring practices in 2021, Ezukanma returned to lead the Red Raiders in receiving for a third consecutive year. Bringing a unique mix of speed, size and footwork to the position, the All-Big 12 receiver is another fascinating specimen with a 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame.
Pro Football Network’s Ian Cummings is among the highest on the Texas native, arguing that Ezukanma could turn the draft upside down and be a first round pick, despite his average rank among all prospects floating around the 190-200 mark:
“With his traits, he can truly be a three-level threat at the next level. Ezukanma’s size is what stands out first. At 6’3″, 220 pounds, the Texas Tech WR has great range and density. He also has elite length, with arms that might measure over 32 inches. Beyond his size, Ezukanma is an impressive athlete, and by extension, a tremendous run-after-catch threat. The Texas Tech WR has great lateral agility and elusiveness for his size. Furthermore, he owns superb explosiveness both off the line and in open space. Ezukanma has the burst to create and elongate space after the catch. He also has the deep speed to stack defensive backs.”
Just reading that description would have any team’s fans drooling over the potential he could bring to the table. Rarely do you see a prospect with the size, speed and contested catch ability of Ezukanma not get major fanfare at draft time, but there’s still two weeks to change that. Nevertheless, the 22-year-old could make for another great second round pick for the Bears as long as no teams fall in love with him and grab him in the late first round.
