Starting at 50, we are going to countdown everyday with a special post until the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers kickoff at Solider Field.
Each day’s number will have significance to a Bears player, matchup vs. a 2015 opponent or the matchup against the Packers. With today marking 50 days until kickoff, what better way than to honor Samurai Mike.
Mike Singletary
Singletary was a staple in one of the greatest defenses in NFL history as he helped lead the Bears to a Super Bowl XX win over the New England Patriots. Samurai Mike struck fear into opponents serving as the Bears middle linebacker for all 12 of his NFL seasons.
Singletary finished first or second in team tackles in 11 of 12 seasons in the Windy City and recorded a total of 7 interceptions and 19 sacks. He made the Pro Bowl 10 times and was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
Singletary went on to coach the Baltimore Ravens linebackers from 2003-04 including future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis. He took his first head coaching job with the San Francisco 49ers in 2009 and followed it up by coaching the Minnesota Vikings linebackers from 2011-13.
Check back tomorrow for #49.
