Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell could be returning to the team sooner than we thought.
Just a week after manager Joe Maddon said he had no idea how long Russell would be out, the shortstop spoke to the media and provided good news before Friday’s game with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Russell told the media that he’s very close to making his return from a foot injury that has kept him sidelined since early August.
He also didn’t rule out being activated during the very important weekend series against the Cardinals.

Javier Baez has filled in for Russell in his absence and has performed well. It will be interesting to see if Maddon goes back to Russell or attempts to slowly work him back into the lineup.
Either way, the Cubs are going to need Russell to be very good offensively to give them a spark in their lineup during this pennant race.
