The Chicago Cubs overcame bad news late last night as OF Albert Almora broke his hamate bone in his left-hand. The hamate bone is located in the wrist area. Almora broke his hamate bone while swinging a baseball bat. Almora is one of the Cubs top prospects and Baseball America has him #33 on their rankings of all players in the minors. Almora was the Cubs 1st-round pick of last year’s draft. The only Cubs player ahead of Almora in the minors is 3B Javier Baez.
Almora was the source to the knowledge as he tweeted; “Not a good! Broke my Hamate Bone!”. That’s the most reliable and best source possible.
This is a set-back for Almora as he wanted to make a splash this year and make a jump in the minors.
Almora will not participate is any baseball activities for 3-4 weeks and will not see game action for 6-8 weeks. We’re looking at a late-May return for Almora. Almora will likely start the 2013 season with Low-A Kane County Cougars.
Brett Taylor over at Bleacher Nation tweeted a great line; “Nick Markakis came back from a hamate injury last year and posted a .335/.390/.489. Markakis missed a little over a month”. Hopefully that’ll be the same case for Almora.
The Cubs have had bad luck with wrist injuries over the year … Derrek Lee was never the same when he injured his wrist and Ian Stewart’s wrist injury kept lingering. (But Stewart says his wrist is 100% healthy for the 1st time in a couple seasons, so we shall see how he plays.)
Dustin Geiger, another Cubs prospect, tweeted; “dang bro sorry to hear that..happened to me last year..Dr. Nagle up in Chicago does great work! You’ll be alright”.
From the reports I’ve seen, Almora may have been lucky and he’ll be good to go when his hamate bone heals. Now we can breath easier and put the panic button behind us (for now…). I can’t wait until Almora to be healthy and for him to make a splash this year!
