The White Sox have reached a 4-year agreement to extend the contract of Alexei Ramirez
CHICAGO — The most complete shortstop in the American League apparently is about to get paid. And Alexei Ramirez is going to be part of the White Sox for a number of years to come.
A Monday tweet from Jorge Ebro of the Nuevo Herald reported a contract extension having been reached between the White Sox and Ramirez for four years, $32.5 million, with a $10 million option for the fifth year. A White Sox source said nothing was imminent to be announced on Monday night, and a second source close to the situation confirmed to MLB.com that talks had been going on between the two sides but nothing was official.
Contract talks getting serious between Ramirez and the White Sox certainly stand as no surprise. The White Sox picked up the 2011 option on Ramirez’s contract in early December, giving Ramirez a base salary of $2.75 million, after he opted out of the final year of his four-year deal that would have paid him $1.1 million. The White Sox could have let Ramirez go to arbitration and had until Dec. 15 to make this particular call.
