Interim head coach Thomas Brown is set to lead the Chicago Bears for the final time at Lambeau Field on Sunday. If the Bears don’t beat the Green Bay Packers in Week 18, Brown will finish with a .000 record at 0-5.
The Bears head coaching search will become the team’s leading priority on Sunday night. CEO Kevin Warren and general manager Ryan Poles will try to find a “leader of men” for 2025.
Several coaches have been linked to the Bears in recent weeks. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is a fan favorite. Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and current Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy have also popped up.
The Chicago Bears have an interesting coach on their radar
According to The Athletic‘s Dianna Russini, the Bears are considering another coach. Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is someone Chicago is interested in.
“The Bears are gearing up for their head-coaching search, and a few big names are already on their radar: Vrabel, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Weaver, the Dolphins’ DC, Russini wrote. “GM Ryan Poles has been doing serious homework on these candidates, particularly Weaver.
“Sources from both the Ravens — where Weaver spent three seasons — and the Dolphins have nothing but praise for his leadership qualities. Currently, the Dolphins rank third in the NFL in total defense — the first time in 22 years they’ve been this high (they ranked third in 2002 as well). Players have a lot of respect for the 44-year-old Weaver, describing him as “high energy,” “emotionally intelligent” and someone who holds players accountable. While we might not have a one-size-fits-all definition of the “leader of men” the Bears say they are looking for, Weaver seems to fit the bill.”
No HC experience or offensive mind? No problem
Weaver started his coaching career as a graduate assistant with Florida in 2010. His first stint in the NFL was with the New York Jets as an assistant defensive line coach. The 44-year-old coach first became a defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans in 2020, lasting one year before the remainder Bill O’Brien’s Texans staff were fired after a 4-12 season. (O’Brien was fired in October of the 2020 season.)
Weaver, a defensive end/linebacker played college football for Notre Dame and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2002 draft.
Weaver’s profile appears to be the opposite of what Chicago was supposed to be looking for. He’s not an offensive mind to pair with Caleb Williams. He also has zero NFL head coaching experience.
Could this be another classic move by Poles?
