Chicago Bears: Is Ashton Jeanty a Boom or Bust Prospect?

The Chicago Bears are busy getting ready to start the most critical part of the 2025 offseason with the NFL Scouting Combine and free agency just weeks away.

As the extensive player evaluation process begins for Chicago, the Bears will need to answer a very important question: Does Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty make sense for the Bears?

Chicago Bears First-Round Pick Will Be Complicated

With the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, there will be questions about what direction the Bears decide to go in. While offensive line and edge rusher appear to be the two biggest needs that general manager Ryan Poles will need to address, free agency will also set the course for how the franchise operates in the draft.

With the Bears trying to engineer a quick turnaround in 2025, Jeanty could make sense. New head coach Ben Johnson will likely want to find a running back who fits his scheme and more importantly, can take the Bears running attack to another level.

Ashton Jeanty Is A Proven College Prospect

Since becoming a full-time starter in college two seasons ago, Jeanty has risen to become one of the nation’s top running backs. In 2024, he accumulated 2601 rushing yards and 29 rushing touchdowns while averaging seven yards per carry.

As a dual-threat running back, he also had an impact on Boise State’s pass game, hauling in 80 receptions for 862 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. At the next level, in the right offense, he could take his ability to be a receiving threat to another level, transcending the offense in the process.

Taking Jeanty Might Be A Bad Move

As good as Jeanty has shown to be in college, he may not be the best pick when Chicago is on the clock at No. 10 overall. So much of picking Jeanty could come down to whether or not the Bears can actually overhaul the offensive line in free agency, giving Poles and Johnson the flexibility to address running back.

Accounting for wear and tear will also be incredibly important when the front office evaluates the Boise State product. For a player who was the focal point of Boise State’s offense over the last two years, there could be a lot of excess wear and tear that he’s taken. This could mean that he may only have one contract in the league.

What Selecting Jeanty Comes Down To

Chicago Bears
Saturday, August 31, 2024; Statesboro, Georgia; Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty gains yardage against Georgia Southern during the season opener on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia.

The Bears will have a number of questions to answer when it comes to taking Jeanty. In the right offense and behind a potent offensive line, he could really be an asset for Johnson’s offense. And if Chicago does want to get more explosive on offense, taking him could be the right move.

But if the franchise views him as being a player who could only play four to five seasons, the duration of a rookie contract, he may not be the right pick. In what’s considered to be a deep running back class, the Bears could opt to wait until later to take a running back and spend a high pick elsewhere.
