The Bears’ Israel Idonije has been selected as a finalist for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. He is one of 3 finalists that include him, the Raiders’ Nnamdi Asomugha, and the Vikings’ Madieu Williams.
“It’s not really about me,” Idonije said of the recognition for his community work, after Sunday’s NFC Championship loss to the Packers. “It’s about a team of people that are committed to service. An incredible group of people, from teachers, doctors … I mean, across the board.”
The Payton Award winner will get the Gladiator statue, and the player’s favorite charity will receive a $20,000 donation.
A lot of Bear fans are still upset about the loss to the Packers and they should be. However, this is bigger then the game of football. This is an award to recognize one certain players’ ability to help others off of the field. Hats off to Idonije for a great season on and off the field! Would be great for a Bear to win the award.
