As the Chicago Bears rookie minicamp wrapped up this past weekend, much attention was focused on the big names the Bears selected in this year’s draft including linebacker Roquan Smith and wide receiver Anthony Miller. One name that didn’t draw attention, but could shine during training camp is seventh-round draft pick, Javon Wims.
The former Georgia wide receiver has a huge opportunity to be able to surprise a lot of people in Bourbonnais.
Wims leaves Georgia where he was the leading receiver for a Bulldogs team that finished as SEC Champions and appeared in the National Championship game against Alabama last season. Wims caught 45 passes for 720 yards and had a team-high seven touchdown catches. He did this in the SEC, which is regarded as featuring the best defenses in all of college football and the best future NFL talent.
New head coach Matt Nagy’s biggest focus will be having a high power offense that utilizes as many weapons as possible to keep opposing defenses unsure about what’s going to happen next. With a new coaching staff, players are more likely to be given the same opportunity across the board as no one has ties yet to the new coaching staff. Wims can make a name for himself among a wide receiver group that was one of the worst in the NFL last season.
This season will provide the benefit of an additional pre-season game this year to provide Nagy’s coaching staff with more game film of Wims. An additional game provides more playing time as the starters are less likely to play deeper into the pre-season games with an additional game providing a higher risk of injury.
Wims will get several chances during the game and could make the most with his 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame. He will provide quarterbacks with a big target and could get several chances in the red-zone with 50/50 pass attempts to utilize his size.
General manager Ryan Pace has seen seventh-round draft selections be successful in the league before as during time with the New Orleans Saints in wide receiver Marques Colston.
Colston was the Saints top wide receiver for several seasons and had multiple 1,000-yard receiving campaigns. Wims has a tremendous opportunity ahead of him and is fortunate for the situation he is coming in too. If he can make the most of it, the Bears organization will be even luckier for taking a chance on him with their last draft pick.
