Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for an AFC Wild Card showdown against the Baltimore Ravens, but at least one analyst suggests the legendary Super Bowl-winning head coach could be on the move this offseason.
Wednesday, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg suggested that one option general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears should keep on the table during the franchise’s head coaching search is a trade to pry Tomlin away from the Steelers.
“There’s no team in the NFL that needs a culture built like the Chicago Bears,” Greenberg said during an episode of ESPN’s Get Up morning show. “The Chicago Bears should offer anything it takes to see if the Steelers would be willing to trade them Mike Tomlin and then just hand the franchise to him.”
It is a radical suggestion, it’s difficult to imagine what it might take for the Steelers to actually consider trading Tomlin away, despite the fact that the franchise hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016 nor appeared in a Super Bowl since 2008.
Would the Steelers actually trade Mike Tomlin to the Chicago Bears?
Certainly, the Steelers would be inclined to entertain an offer that includes multiple first-round picks for Tomlin, who has never had a losing season and is in the midst of guiding Pittsburgh to the postseason for the fourth time in the past five seasons. Maybe even a trade involving Caleb Williams (which the Bears would never do would fill a longstanding need for the Steelers at quarterback.
This is a fascinating scenario, but one that might prove difficult to pull off unless the Steelers believe that Tomlin has taken the franchise as far as he is capable. In that case, adding a culture-driver with Tomlin’s track record of consistently competing would be a home run for Poles and the Bears.
