Bears put in waiver claim for QB Kyle Orton

ProFootballtalk.com and NFL reporter Jay Glazer have reported the Chicago Bears have put in a waiver claim for former Bears quarterback Kyle Orton.

Orton was put on waivers Tuesday, after losing his starting spot to Tim Tebow in the second half of the Broncos week five game against the Chargers.

Since coming to Denver in a trade that involved current Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, Orton has struggled to win games for the Bronocs, failing to make the playoffs the past two seasons.

Orton was the Bears quarterback from 2005-2008 and led them to the playoffs in 2005, before losing his job to Rex Grossman.  Orton was 21-12 as a starter for the Bears.

The Bears are currently 30th on the waiver wire order, meaning 29 other teams can claim Orton before the Bears.  However, Orton won’t be happy with that choice. ESPN 1000 is reporting that Orton is telling other teams below the Bears not to put a waiver claim in for him, because he will not show up.

Bold move for the neck beard.

If the Bears do claim Orton, he will serve as a backup to Caleb Hanie.  Orton won’t see action unless Hanie is hurt or if Hanie struggles.  It will take Orton a few weeks to digest the playbook, so I can’t see him getting much game action anytime soon.

The Bears could also negotiate a contract with Orton if he clears all waivers.  That would be a much cheaper option for the Bears.  The question is, can Orton be serviceable for the Bears for the remainder of the season?
