As of Thursday, the Chicago Bears have interviewed two high-profile candidates for the open head coaching position.
The Bears met with former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel on Wednesday. Chicago’s main competition for Vrabel appears to be the New England Patriots, a team he won three Super Bowls with as a linebacker. The Bears interviewed former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll on Thursday.
Ben Johnson’s line of thinking takes a turn
Chicago is set to talk (virtually) to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Saturday. Per ESPN‘s Dan Graziano, things are different for Johnson in this NFL hiring cycle than in the previous two years. He’s more likely to accept a job offer.
“Jobs with a good young QB are the most likely for Johnson, though maybe Chicago and Jacksonville more because the Patriots might be locked in on Vrabel,” Graziano wrote. Johnson is appealing on his own, but the Bears would get the bonus of weakening a division rival in Detroit with that hire.
“Either way, I expect Johnson will take a head coach job this cycle. He has been squirrely about it the past couple of years, but people I talk to close to the situation believe he’s in a different frame of mind and expect him to embrace the opportunity if it’s offered, which I believe it will be.”
Johnson’s change of heart is good news for the Bears.
Mike McCarthy is believed to have an interest in the Chicago Bears
ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler provided an update on Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who can interview in free agency on Jan. 14. The Cowboys denied the Bears’ request to interview McCarthy before the 14th, but Fowler believes the 61-year-old head coach would have interest in Chicago if he leaves the Cowboys.
“My sense is McCarthy will have interest should he leave Dallas, something we’re guaranteed to get clarity on by the time his contract expires,” Fowler wrote.
The Bears will have to choose between a coach like McCarthy, Vrabel, and Carroll versus a guy like Johnson or Joe Brady. Johnson provides Chicago with a creative offensive mind. The other three have proven success as head coaches and have plenty of playoff experience.
