The Chicago Blackhawks have officially announced the acquisition of defenseman Johnny Oduya from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 2nd and 3rd-round draft pick in 2013.
In 63 games played this season, Oduya has registered 2 goals, including a game-winner, along with 11 assists, and has logged an average of 19:20 ice time per game. He has also racked up 98 blocked shots, good for second on the team while he was with Winnipeg, and is credited with 53 hits.
Oduya, 30, is a great skater and a pretty good puck handler that Stan Bowman praised, which fits the Blackhawks quick-paced style, but his play focuses more on the defensive side. You can bet Oduya will see a lot of time on the penalty kill, and you can also bet that Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk will have a field day pronouncing his name during every broadcast.
Oduya is in the final year of a 3-year, $3.5 million contract.
That wasn’t the only trade Chicago got done today. Stan Bowman made a minor move dealing forward/defenseman John Scott to the New York Rangers for a 5th-round selection in the 2012 NHL draft.
Scott, 29, had only recorded an assist in 29 games this season for the Blackhawks and averaged just a little bit under 7 minutes of ice time per game. He is an unrestricted free agent after the years end and carries a full-season cap hit of $512,500.
ROSTER UPDATE: Blackhawks have recalled Andrew Shaw on Monday afternoon.
