Outdoor hockey is returning to Chicago.
Today the league announced that the Chicago Blackhawks will host the Pittsburgh Penguins outdoors at Solider Field next season.
The game will be part of the NHL’s Coors Light 2014 outdoor series and will take place March 1, 2014 at 8 p.m. EST. Previously the league announced a Detroit Red Wings-Toronto Maple Leafs game on New Years Day hosted at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
The league is also expected to announce more games as part of the series in the near future.
This will be the second outdoor game the Blackhawks have hosted. The first coming on Jan. 1 2009, when the Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field. With the success of that game, there was no doubt outdoor hockey would return to Chicago.
“Hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins at iconic Soldier Field promises to be a unique experience for our organization and our fans,” Blackhawks president and CEO John McDonough said.
