The wait is over. According to sources, the Chicago Blackhawks have traded defensive man Nick Leddy to the New York Islanders. The move has been anticipated for a few months now as the Hawks had to get under the salary cap by opening night on Wednesday.
There was debate about who the Hawks would trade. Some thought that the much older Johnny Oduya would be the odd man out. But with a couple of injuries and a tough contract situation, Oduya was not an easy move. Leddy, on the other hand was a much easier trade piece. At just 23 years old, Leddy has tremendous potential moving forward. He never quite took that step forward in Chicago but playing in New York for the Islanders should provide Leddy with a chance to break out.
The Blackhawks received D Ville Pokka, D T.J. Brennan and G Anders Nilsson in return for Leddy. Brennan, 25, has seen some action in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers. He spent the entire 2013-2014 season in the AHL. Pokka, 23, was a second round pick by the Islanders in 2012 and has spent the past two years playing in Finland. Nilsson, 24, has played 25 games in net for Islanders over the past three years.
