The Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox reached an agreement to send ace Chris Sale for a package of prospects back in 2016.
But the two teams may not be done trading just yet.
The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo is reporting that the Red Sox have been scouting both Jose Quintana and Todd Frazier recently. With Boston looking to amp up its rotation, Quintana makes a lot of sense.
The Red Sox are also looking to get some more production out of third base and could use a dangerous right-handed bat.
Here’s what Cafardo wrote in his notes piece for Sunday morning:
Yes, the Red Sox have been scouting Frazier given their tenuous third base situation and the fact they want to give Rafael Deversmore time to develop. Frazier has the perfect power swing for Fenway but has had an awful start (.198, four homers, 15 RBIs). Frazier is making $12 million this season, but the White Sox would eat some of that if a trade came to fruition. There have been reports of the Red Sox looking at White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana as well, but we doubt the Red Sox would give up another package of top prospects for him.
Frazier would be a rental player for the Red Sox, something they could pursue just to get some more production. It likely wouldn’t cost the Red Sox a whole lot but anything the White Sox can get for Frazier will be a bonus as they continue to rebuild.
Then there’s Quintana.
After giving up top prospects Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech, the Red Sox probably don’t want to send another big package to the White Sox in exchange for a starting pitcher.
Quintana’s name will be one of the hottest as we approach the trade deadline in July and a deal is more likely to happen than not.
