The Cubs have traded two starting pitchers to the Oakland Athletics for a load of prospects. Ken Rosenthal reports the Cubs have sent starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the A’s for shortstop Addison Russell, outfielder Billy McKinley and pitcher Dan Straily.
Russell is the A’s top prospect and was ranked as high as #3 overall by rankings. He should be the Cubs top prospect as soon as he joins the club.
McKinley is also another top Oakland prospect and could fit in well with the Cubs outfield situation. Especially with the setbacks by Jorge Soler.
Straily was in the A’s rotation and will be put into the Cubs rotation when he joins the team. He’s projected as a fourth or fifth starter in the future.
The Cubs are now LOADED with infield talent and it will be interesting to see who plays where. It’s clear Theo is building this team around hitting.
