Milwaukee made mistakes, Chicago made them pay. Dioner Navarro and company made sure not to waste away any errors committed by the Brewers nor the brilliant performance from Matt Garza.
The pitcher and catcher combo took care of business from the get-go with fastball control. Garza brought the heat early and his command prevented Milwaukee from collecting a hit until the fourth. They were shut out until the sixth when Logan Schafer doubled to right to score Jean Segura from third. Over seven, Garza fanned 10 while allowing just the lone run and a smattering of eight hits. This would be his third straight win since the switch to battery-mate Navarro.
The catcher not only played backstop but the part of slugger as well. In the third, Navarro would belt one to right off starter Wily Peralta plating Ryan Sweeney and Brian Bogusevic. Sweeney had reached previously on a fielding error by Caleb Gindl and Bogusevic on an error by Juan Francosco.
The bomb supported two runs scored in the second from an RBI double and RBI single from Bogusevic and Darwin Barney, respectively. The Cubs added another in the fourth on a sacrafice fly from Nate Schierholtz who knocked in Garza.
Cubs’ fundamentals were smooth not only at the plate but once they reached them. Stolen bases were tallied from both Sweeney and Starlin Castro. That was all they would need as Milwaukee could only add one more following Garza’s exit. Juan Francisco homered in the eighth off Blake Parker but bullpen member’s James Russell and Shawn Camp were able to close it out without trouble.
Cubs cashed in on Milwaukee’s blunders and were able to get the series win. They look to do similar work tomorrow when they begin their series against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco. It’ll be Travis Wood (5-6, 2.85) facing Hisashi Iwakuma (7-3, 2.26) at 9:10pm CST.
