Win: Hiram Burgos (1-0) Loss: Edwin Jackson (0-3) Save: None
Home Runs: MIL: Jonathan Lucroy (3)
The Good: Edwin Jackson started off well, and didn’t have a bad inning, something that had been plaguing him in his past starts. The Cubs had three hits in the Top of the 4th, when they put up their lone run. Alfonso Soriano drove in his second RBI and Nate Schierholtz hit his seventh double in the inning. Dave Sappelt also doubled, which broke him out of his mini slump. Hector Rondon and Kameron Loe added scoreless innings out of the pen.
The Bad: Darwin Barney and Dioner Navarro went hitless. Barney has just one hit since coming off the DL. Nobody in the lineup had more than one hit.
The Ugly: It’s never a good thing when there is more ugly than good and bad. The Cubs miscues in the field continued to plague them, as Alfonso Soriano dropped a fly ball, which put the runner on second. Then Anthony Rizzo bobbled a double play ball. Rizzo, however, was not charged with an error because the Cubs still got the out. Right after Rizzo’s error, Starlin Castro also bobbled a routine ground ball, which allowed another run to score. The following inning, Edwin Jackson overthrew Starlin Castro on what could have been another potential double play. These fielding woes are turning into a constant occurence for a Cubs team that looks everything but fundamentally sound.
The Stat: Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Notes: Ian Stewart is expected to join the Cubs by Monday at the earliest. He has been rehabbing at Triple A Iowa.
The Cubs will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow as Scott Feldman takes on Wily Peralta at 1:10 CST.
