The rumors about Bryce Harper wanting to play for the Chicago Cubs have been swirling the last couple of weeks.
First there was a report from Peter Gammons stating that Harper has interest playing for the Cubs in the future. Then following a game between the Cubs and Washington Nationals a week ago, Harper posted a photo on Instagram with Kris Bryant.
The caption is what caught everyone’s eyes as Harper ended it with “#Back2BackOneDay”
But in a recent interview with Barry Svrluga in the Washington Post, Harper isn’t revealing his hand.
Instead, he says he doesn’t know what Gammons is talking about.
“I love Peter Gammons. One of the best baseball historians ever. But I have no idea what the hell he’s talking about,” Harper said.
He also gave the reasoning behind the Instagram caption, playing it off.
“For what reason?” Harper said at his locker, smiling. “I do that to the media because they stir it more than I do. That’s why I do the things I do at times, because it’s funny to me. It’s like, ‘All right, people want to talk about this and talk about that. Why not just throw this out there and make them think about it?’ ”
In the column, Harper went on to mention that his comments and posts do impact his teammates in the Nationals Clubhouse.
Does Harper have future plans to play with Bryant and the Cubs? It’s possible. But we won’t know right away.
We will have to wait until Harper becomes a free agent after the 2018 season. Until then, Cubs fans can always dream.
