The Chicago Cubs are in total disarray. After winning big on Friday night with the buzz of Starlin Castro, the Cubs fell 14-2 on Saturday.
Tom Gorzelanny (1-4) allowed 3 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings. He walked 1 while striking out 9. It wouldn’t matter however, since his offense only scored 2 runs all game.
The Chicago bullpen only made things worse. Esmailin Caridad was activated from the disabled list (Jeff Gray was optioned to AAA) and allowed 2 unearned runs. Every single reliever that followed Caridad allowed runs to score. Sean Marshall and Carlos Zambrano combined to allow 3 runs to score in an inning plus. Justin Berg allowed 6 runs in the 8th inning.
Xavier Nady added a pinch hit RBI while Marlon Byrd went 3-5 with an RBI. Starlin Castro went 1-4 with a double. Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez went a combined 1-9.
Things just keep getting worse for the North-Siders. Despite the 3rd highest payroll they sit 3 games under .500 at 14-17. At this point not even the hype of Starlin Castro is going to appease the fan base. People want to see change and as long as Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella are running the show, fans can expect to see more of the same. A very mediocre team yet an expensive – mediocre team.
