Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams didn’t have a day that will stand out on the stat sheet, but he played a key role in the team’s 24-22 win over the Green Bay Packers in front of 77,862 fans at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
The victory was the first over the Packers in 12 tries. Chicago also snapped a 10-game losing streak for the season.
The Chicago Bears made the game-winning field goal this time
The Bears led for most of the game, but the Packers took a 22-21 lead with 54 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Williams would lead Chicago’s offense in a six-play, 47-yard drive before Cario Santos would drill a 51-yard field goal to give the Bears some momentum heading into the offseason.
The Bears got into field goal range on a risky play. On third and 11 from the Chicago 49-yard line, Williams connected on a slant over the middle to DJ Moore for 18 yards. The play was risky, as the Bears were out of timeouts, and Williams and the offense had to rush to spike the ball with three seconds left on the clock.
Caleb Williams adjusted the final offensive play
Per Sean Hammond of Shaw Local, WIlliams adjusted the play, which was originally supposed to go to the sideline.
“Caleb Williams made the adjustment on the completion to DJ over the middle that set up the game-winning field goal,” Hammond wrote. “Original play call is something to the sideline. Williams saw an opportunity and signaled to DJ.”

Matt LaFleur: Green Bay Packers screwed up the final 15 seconds
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said after the game his coaching staff wasn’t expecting a throw over the middle in that situation. He also noted that defensive back Carrington Valentine screwed up by not delaying his get-up after tackling Moore, which would have made the possibility of the Bears stopping the clock for a field goal attempt unlikely.
Williams is lucky the Packers’ defense didn’t play good situational football. But after Chicago has lost several games this season by an unfortunate bounce here or there, the rookie quarterback should be happy to claim the victory.
Williams finished Sunday’s game 21-of-29 passing for 148 yards and a touchdown.
