Chicago Bears fans let out a “sell the team” chant at the end of Thursday night’s 6-3 win by the Seattle Seahawks at Soldier Field. The Bears have now lost 10 games in a row.
Caleb Williams and the Bears offense struggled to move the ball against the Seahawks on Thursday night. Much of those struggles could be blamed on the offensive line, which contributed to giving up seven total sacks and committing numerous penalties.
The Chicago Bears have failed quarterbacks
General manager Ryan Poles failed to put together an offensive line or decent wide receiver corps to aid in Justin Fields’ early development in the league. Despite failing Fields, the McCaskey family trusted Poles to develop the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft.
Instead, the McCaskey’s trust has turned into a 4-12 season, with Williams working with his second head coach and third offensive coordinator before the Bears’ regular season finale against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Jan 5.
Caleb Williams: Fans’ frustrations have been brewing for a while
During his postgame press conference on Thursday night, Williams was asked how he processed the frustration of the fanbase after they asked for ownership to sell the team 16 games into his NFL career. Williams said those feelings have been brewing for a while.
“It’s my first year, so, you know, their frustrations go way longer back then I’ve been here,” Williams said. “My job is to, you know, go out there and win games. We don’t focus on outside noise. You know the fans are…they’re going to cheer and maybe boo sometimes. You can’t react to that. It’s not something that you know we react to.”
“We have a job to do. Sometimes you know, you don’t, you don’t do so well on the job some days, and some days you, you know, you’re pretty consistent. Some days, you play a great game.”
The fanbase has a lot to be frustrated about. Matt Eberflus should not have been retained before the 2024 season. Shane Waldron should not have been hired as the offensive coordinator in January. Poles could have done more to put his quarterback in a better situation for a rookie season, starting with the interior offensive line.
But the fanbase shouldn’t be frustrated with Williams. Williams made several throws on Thursday night that show why Poles drafted him at No. 1.
However, it may take ownership to decide to fire Poles for Williams to see a winning culture in Chicago via a new GM.
