The White Sox were not expected to make much noise this season, but since calling up 22-year-old Carlos Sanchez, there’s been good reason to watch the team over on the South Side.
The Sox started the season with Micah Johnson at second. However, with three errors in 98 chances and a .969 fielding percentage, the Sox were due for a change. After sending Sanchez down in early April after making the opening day roster, they brought him back May 15 and the Sox have been rolling ever since.
“They give me the opportunity to play every day at second base and do my job and I feel very confident right now about my game,’’ Sanchez told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Since being called up, Sanchez doesn’t only have a perfect fielding percentage, but has helped turn five double plays, something Sox fans got very used over the years with Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez up the center. At the plate, he has not quite found his touch, but his low average didn’t stop him from hitting a walk-off single against Cleveland on an 0-2 pitch in the 10th inning that ended a gem of a pitcher’s duel in Chris Sale and Corey Kluber.
“It was the first time that I hit a walk-off hit,” Sanchez said. “But the most important thing is that we won the game.”
Given his spectacular defense and young enthusiasm, there’s good reason for hope on the South Side.
