Round 2, Pick 41: OT Jonah Savaiinaea, Arizona / 6’5, 335 LBS
Another offensive lineman? Yes. The more the merrier for Ben Johnson and company.
Jonah Savaiinaea is another nasty lineman who played right tackle and right guard for most of his collegiate career but is projected to be a great fit just about anywhere in the NFL. His mean streak and physicality are something this Chicago Bears offensive line could desperately use going forward.
Pass protection is his bread and butter, as is his strength and strong football IQ that is so widely raved about by his peers. Savaiinaea impressed at the Senior Bowl, where he took most of his reps at guard. He’s still limited as a run-blocker and will need to improve that aspect of his game in the future. Coaching him up will be crucial.
Getting Savaiinaea at this point in the draft may be a stretch, but it’s not super unlikely, given the amount of uncertainty when it comes to offensive linemen. In my opinion, this draft is loaded with talent in the trenches, and the Bears need to take advantage of that while they can.
