Round 5, Pick 149 (projected): S Lathan Ransom, Ohio State / 6’1 210 LBS
Safety is going to be a need for the Bears eventually, as the future of guys like Kevin Byard and even Jaquan Brisker could be in question with this new regime set to take place. A guy who has been getting some buzz as of late is Lathan Ransom from Ohio State.
Another proven winner, Ransom was a cornerstone of the stout OSU defense, providing excellent rush defense and special teams ability. Ransom does remind me of Brisker in some ways, being a physically imposing safety with less-than-ideal ball skills. The fifth-year senior only intercepted three passes during his entire collegiate career.
This would be more of a depth pick at this point and a potential replacement if the Bears do decide to move on from one of their starting safeties in the future. Ransom also provides a special teams punch, something that most good teams in this league seem to have.
