Shane Waldron’s offense struggles
As mentioned earlier, the Chicago Bears hired Shane Waldron to be the new offensive coordinator. Waldron held the same position with the Seattle Seahawks for the past three seasons. Additionally, had success working with quarterbacks. He worked with Tom Brady and Jared Goff. He also got credit for reviving Geno Smith’s career.
Waldron runs a more modern offense than we have seen the Chicago Bears run. It is a dynamic offense that has running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers working together to help the quarterback. The Bears have always had trouble having those three areas of the offense working together.
With all the new faces on offense, it would be natural to expect there to be some rough times, especially early in the season. It is difficult to have everyone on the same page and running like a fine-tuned machine. There will be some bumps on the road before things settle.
With the defense playing well out of the gates, it will mitigate some of the offensive struggles. Keep in mind that in the final 13 weeks of the season, the Chicago Bears defense allowed about 18 points a game. If the defense can play like that for the entire 2024 season then that would be good. The defense can carry the offense until it starts to hold its own.
However, if the pass rush is not good, and the defense suffers because of it, not having a smooth offense and struggling to score points will be a huge problem. Giving up a lot of points and not scoring points is a recipe for disaster.
Waldron’s offense does not need to be perfect right at the start. However, there are plenty of talented players on the offense. Those players can make big plays that can help the offense move forward. If there is a total lack of cohesion from the start, it could be too late before the offense finally gets it going.
