Number 1: What is going on with Nate Davis and will he be a key asset?
Poles signed right guard Nate Davis last season. The hope was that he and Darnell Wright would solidify the right side of the offensive line. That did not work out as planned, however. He dealt with a death in his family that kept him out for some time. That might have affected his conditioning because later he dealt with injuries.
Davis missed six games and was limited in others. It was a struggle for him. However,
with a full offseason to get his head backing the game and to get healthy, the Chicago Bears felt he could do exactly what Poles imagined when he signed him.
Again, things have not gone as planned. Davis missed OTAs. Of course, OTAs are voluntary. While having players attend helps make things run smoothly, their attendance is not mandatory. A few players did not attend, and Davis was among them.
With the start of minicamp, the Chicago Bears and their fans felt they’d see Davis in action. Since it was mandatory, Davis would be there, right? Well, Davis did show up. However, just because he was there did not mean he would practice. That is what happened. He was just a spectator during the three days.
Now the Chicago Bears, who had Davis and Teven Jenkins ranked in the top 32 among guards, have a question with Davis. There is something about a foot injury. However, does he want to play? The Bears have had Ryan Bates play at Davis’ position.
We saw what happened with Jenkins in 2022. He was the starting left tackle. However, with some struggles with the coaching staff, Braxton Jones rose and took the job away from Jenkins. Jenkins ended up being demoted to the third-string players before settling in at guard.
Could Davis lose his job? This is an important season for the Chicago Bears. They need to have all their players be on the same page. The players are learning a new system so they have to get it down. Not being out there could result in struggles.
Let’s see what happens once training camp begins. Will Davis finally get on the field and show his worth, or will he continue to miss practices? If that continues, the question becomes whether he becomes a backup (an expensive one) or the Chicago Bears trade him.
