2. Bears take Jaxon Smith-Njigba
JSN would be my preferred selection if Carter were off the board at nine. Quarterback Justin Fields wants him in Chicago. Bears fans would love to watch the Ohio State connection next season. If Carter is off the board, the Bears may as well fix the offense this year and worry about defense next offseason.
There are several talented defensive linemen in the second round they can take and develop during the season. The Bears could sign an offensive tackle in free agency, like Donovan Smith or Isaiah Wynn, to help the offensive line. Then maybe add another wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins, to complete the offense. 2023 is a critical season to judge Fields’ talents before next year’s quarterback prospects.
The Bears can’t fix everything in one offseason. Draft JSN, evaluate the offense, and decide if Darnell Mooney, Chase Claypool, and Fields are in the team’s long-term interests.
