The Chicago Bears are in need of a head coach after letting go of Matt Eberflus during last season.
The Bears have been conducting a wide-ranging search for their next head coach. With a ton of interviews lined up, the possibilities are endless for who the next head coach will be.
An intriguing Bears-San Francisco 49ers trade proposal from Sports Illustrated swaps two valuable assets.
The swap between the Chicago Bears and 49ers
In his proposal from SI, Alan Goldsher gives the Bears just that, having Chicago send one of their valuable assets, wide receiver D.J. Moore, and a 2025 second-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for their head coach, Kyle Shanahan. According to Goldsher, he writes of the swap:
“Kyle Shanahan is an innovative sideline general who has won 70 of his 132 games,” Goldsher wrote. “But Kyle Shanahan is also an innovative sideline general who hasn’t won a Super Bowl. Last season, the injury-riddled Niners saddled Shanahan with his first sub-.500 record since 2020, and the vibe in the Bay wasn’t what you’d call optimal.
“Shanahan might welcome a change of scenery, and the Niners would definitely welcome Moore, who would be an ideal replacement for the likely-soon-to-be-waived Deebo Samuel.”
The value of both Moore and Shanahan
D.J. Moore is one of the main Bears’ offensive weapons next to Caleb Williams. Moore for the Bears this past season was solid, just missing 1,000 yards receiving with 966 yards. He added six touchdown receptions. The Bears signed Moore to a four-year extension worth $110 million this past season given how great he has been for them.
For Shanahan, in his eight years as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, he has accumulated a record of 132-70, making the playoffs four times in that span and making both the Super Bowl and NFC Championship games twice, in which they lost all four times.
Shanahan is considered one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL and is known as a “quarterback whisperer.” The Bears could benefit from someone of Shanahan’s talents, given they need someone who can unlock Caleb Williams’ full potential.
Would the Chicago Bears make the trade?
I think even given the need for how badly the Bears need a head coach, I don’t foresee them parting ways with such a valuable asset such as D.J. Moore, and a second-round pick that could net them an offensive or defensive lineman for a head coach. With so many other options available, like Mike McCarthy and Pete Carroll, who won’t cost the Bears a player or a pick, an experienced coach is the route they should go.
