Connor Williams, Center
The Chicago Bears signed Coleman Shelton to be the starting center. Last season, they had Cody Whitehair and Lucas Patrick but neither one played well. Poles traded for Ryan Bates and signed Shelton as a free agent. Bates has some experience at center but has not been a full-time player there.
Bates could be better used as the swing guard. He can play both both sides. If that is the case, the Chicago Bears would need someone else to play backup center. Connor Williams could be that backup.
Williams had become a pretty good center the last couple of seasons. However, he suffered a torn ACL late last season. Despite that, he could be ready to play this season. The Bears could sign him to a one-year deal to back up Shelton.
Williams is a six-year veteran. Having him and Shelton tutor rookie quarterback Caleb Williams could help the youngster. Williams knows he won’t have to be depended upon to carry the offensive line. He can play a few snaps to keep Shelton fresh while he himself gets stronger. Then, next season, the Chicago Bears could look for someone via the draft to then back Shelton up.
