Dalton Risner, Offensive Guard
Of course, Poles could go the other way. He may decide to have Bates become the backup center and find someone else to be the swing guard. If that is the case, Dalton Risner would be a good choice.
At the very least Risner could still be on the team no matter what happens with Bates. Poles also signed Matt Pryor. However, Pryor has had his struggles both on the field and staying in shape off the field. He may not make the team. Risner could end up being an important reserve.
Risner has some experience playing in the NFC North. He played with the Minnesota Vikings last season. Now, as a free agent, he has been linked with another NFC North rival, the hated Green Bay Packers. The Chicago Bears could sign him and keep him away from their biggest rivals.
Poles has been serious about protecting Williams and Risner could help do that. Last season, both guards, Teven Jenkins and Nate Davis missed a combined 11 games due to injuries and personal reasons. Jenkins has not played a full season yet so the Poles and the Chicago Bears have to expect him to miss more games in 2024.
