Signing safety Byard to replace Eddie Jackson
To free up some salary cap space the Chicago Bears had to cut some players. One of those players was free safety Eddie Jackson. Jackson and strong safety Jaquan Brisker made a good duo in the past two seasons. However, Jackson hasn’t been healthy enough to fully take advantage of that.
Jackson missed 13 games due to injury in the past three seasons. As a result, he has not been the same ballhawk were used to seeing. With his big contract, the Chicago Bears had to part ways with him.
In his place, Poles signed Kevin Byard to a two-year, $15 million contract. Byard is the same age as Jackson but he doesn’t have the injury history that Jackson has. However, being on the wrong side of 30 has some disadvantages. He will be 33 years old at the end of the contract. Likely, he is not in the long-term plans of the Chicago Bears.
There were quite a few other younger safeties available in free agency. Byard will be 31 when the season begins. We do not know how some players perform after they hit their 30s. In two seasons (or less) the Chicago Bears will be looking for a replacement for Eddie Jackson’s replacement.
