Leaving a treasure trove of picks on the table
We continue to harp on the draft picks here. We are using what Poles said about his rebuild.
We’re gonna build through the draft. We’re gonna acquire young, fast and physical football players.
Having said that, it is curious to see Poles giving away draft picks as if they are cigars. It is important to note that the man Poles replaced as GM, Ryan Pace, said the same thing when he got to Chicago. Ultimately, though, Pace abandoned that and signed big names while leaving many holes and salary cap hell in the roster.
This is what makes the 2025 offseason different from the previous two. Poles is depending on older players to step up and help with the development of his quarterback. Instead of continuing to build an entire team that can take the NFC North “and never let go” to a win-now team. That has not worked for the Chicago Bears in the past. How will it work now?
Some people would point out that the Chicago Bears have nine picks in 2025. That is correct, but that was also the case in 2024. The Bears had eight picks at one point but now have just four. Acquiring players through trades and free agency should supplement the draft, not replace it.
