Round 7, Pick 258: DB Avery Young, Rutgers / 6’1 205 LBS
One of the last picks of the draft is defensive back, Avery Young out of Rutgers. Another fifth-year senior that could potentially compete for a spot on the roster as a backup, special teams, or practice squad.
Young has good ball skills, is very good in zone coverage, and is an above average tackler. Last season, while in coverage, Young had 3 pass breakups, one interception, and a QB rating of 91.6 when targeted. Prior to the 2021 season, Young had accrued 30 starts at cornerback from 2018 to 2020. Having that much experience all over the field could benefit well for the former Scarlet Knight.
His play recognition needs to improve in order for him to be effective in the NFL, but with good coaching and hard work you could see Young playing on Sundays.
