New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is quickly building his staff for the 2025 season. The Bears already confirmed the three coordinator hires: offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, and a returning special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.
They also have hired former NFL standouts such as Antwan Randle El and Al Harris. Former Ohio State quarterback JT Barrett was also hired by the Bears to fill the spot at quarterbacks coach.
One of the bigger questions that is left is what other offensive assistants will join the Chicago Bears coaching staff. Could Johnson be able to bring in more NFL veterans? Could Johnson poach a couple of coaches from his former team in Detroit? NFL’s Ian Rapoport confirmed on Wednesday that the Bears are bringing in a former coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Chicago Bears are hiring Press Taylor
In a post via X, Press Taylor is joining the Bears coaching staff.
“The #Bears are hiring former #Jaguars OC Press Taylor as their passing game coordinator, sources say, a key hire for Ben Johnson and OC Declan Doyle.
Taylor adds experience and expertise in Chicago, plus another voice for Caleb Williams. ”
Taylor was formerly the Jaguars offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2024. Taylor has experience working with a young quarterback as he worked with Trevor Lawrence for three seasons.
Before joining the Jaguars, Taylor spent several years apart of the Philidelphia Eagles coaching staff when Doug Pederson was at the helm as head coach. Taylor started as an offensive quality control coach and then was promoted to assistant quarterback coach. He then was promoted yet again to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. He then was a senior offensive assistant for the Colts in the 2021 season.
Even though Taylor did not succeed as an offensive coordinator, having another voice with plenty of experience is not only beneficial to the coaching staff but Caleb Williams especially. Caleb Williams’ development is going to be a major priority for this offensive coaching staff.
The Bears still have more coaching positions to fill
The Chicago Bears still have a few more positions to fill for their coaching staff and arguably one of the most important is the offensive line coach. The offensive line struggled massively in the 2024 season and they will need a great coach to help improve it for 2025 and beyond.
Brad Biggs revealed on X that the Bears interviewed Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye on Wednesday and are expected to also interview Tulane coach Dan Roushar. Roushar also spent 10 years with the New Orleans Saints.
Hopefully, soon the Bears will hire an offensive line coach and finalize the rest of Johnson’s coaching staff.
