As Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s timeline to be hired as a head coach accelerates in the aftermath of Detroit’s NFC Divisional Playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, one top NFL insider suggests the Bears may be his most coveted destination.
Things are changing in the coaching market
Johnson is among the most coveted head coaching candidates this hiring cycle, and former No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams’ presence at quarterback could make the Bears one of the more attractive landing spots for this offseason’s top candidates.
“Developing,” NFL insider Josina Anderson reported Monday. “There are league sources who now believe Ben Johnson is deeply considering the head coaching vacancy with the Chicago Bears, per league sources.”
This is the first time this offseason that Johnson is permitted to interview in person, now that the Lions’ season is over.
Why Ben Johnson might choose the Chicago Bears
Johnson landing with the Bears would give him the chance to coach a legitimate and ascending franchise quarterback while overseeing an offense that includes playmakers such as receivers D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze, Keenan Allen, and running back D’Andre Swift, among others.
Becoming the Bears head coach also presents the opportunity to square off against his former team twice per season.
While Anderson believes the Bears may be among the leaders to land Johnson’s services, she cautions that no decision has been made.
“Nothing is official,” Anderson posted on social media. “Or ever done until it’s done! We’ll have to wait and see which team Johnson formally decides on.”
