The Chicago Bears are preparing to do all the research needed for head coaching candidate Brian Flores
Despite all of the Ben Johnson hype that has been circulating around the Windy City, the Chicago Bears organization needs to prepare for other routes in this upcoming interview process. With a few different names being tossed around the rumor mill as of late, Brian Flores has picked up some steam. The current Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator will be up for most of the vacancies this offseason, and insider Albert Breer mentioned the Chicago Bears being in the mix for him.
Another name connected to the (Chicago Bears) position is Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores. He was a Boston College teammate of Poles in 2003, and the two have similar roots in the Bill Belichick system (Poles worked under Scott Pioli in Kansas City). I’m also told that Warren’s vetting of Flores with all his old connections in Minnesota (Warren worked for the Vikings for 15 years) yielded strong reviews for the 43-year-old. He will, of course, have to lay out a plan for how things would be different with Williams than they were with Tua Tagovailoa in Miami.
The connections between Flores playing in college with Poles and Warren’s Minnesota ties could easily make him a top-three candidate for the job when everything is said and done. The business itself is not always about hiring your friends or those you are closest with, but having a previous relationship of any kind certainly helps Flores’ case.
If the Chicago Bears don’t go the offensive route for their next head coach, Brian Flores fits the bill for what the franchise might need for their next leader.
In a dream world for fans and probably the players, Johnson is the slam dunk hire this offseason. However, other options will need to be seriously considered until anything goes final. Flores can be seen as a fantastic consolation prize for the Chicago Bears, despite not having an offensive background.
Flores had a somewhat successful stint leading the Miami Dolphins despite being let go by the franchise after just three seasons. His experience as a head coach in the NFL will carry weight in his interviews both with Chicago and not, and it should be a big reason why he lands a job in this hiring cycle.
Arguably the biggest question for Flores when being interviewed by the Chicago Bears brass is what his plan will be with Caleb Williams. As mentioned in Breer’s quote, Tua Tagovailoa did not necessarily have the best run in Miami during Flores’ tenure. Things would need to be much different in his second go around leading an NFL franchise, especially for a young signal-caller in Williams.
There is no doubt that the defense would be in a very good place if Flores is brought into the Chicago Bears organization. Regardless of whether Flores is the hire or not, the team will need a defensive scheme retooling. The unit has not looked the same since Eric Washington took over following the Matt Eberflus firing.
It can be assumed that based on his background and his connection to the key decision-makers in the front office, Flores will get a good chance to land the Chicago Bears head coaching gig this offseason. It might not be enough to leap frog Johnson as the favorite for the job, but he is sure to get multiple interviews with Poles and Warren.
