The Chicago Bears officially announced the hiring of Ben Johnson as the organization’s next head coach on Tuesday. This is the biggest hire in the history of the Bears and everyone around the team is buzzing with excitement on what the future looks like. Johnson was at Halas Hall on Tuesday to sign his contract and made quite the impact on the building in just his first day on the job.
Johnson’s ability to change the game of many key offensive playmakers should be on full display from the jump. In particular, the offensive guru will hope to tap into Caleb William’s full potential as he prepares for his second season in the NFL. The primary goal of this hire for the Bears front office was to do it in the best interest of the young quarterback, and it appears they have done just that.
The Chicago Bears crushed this hire for Caleb Williams
Williams had everything thrown at him in his first NFL season. The USC product had two different offensive play callers along with having his head coach being out of a job after Thanksgiving. Through it all, Williams put together as solid of a first year as he could given the circumstances.
The number one overall pick did a fantastic job at limiting turnovers to begin his career. Williams tossed just six interceptions on the year, four of which came in his first three games. His QBR wasn’t too stellar at a 46.7, but he found a way to be the only quarterback in franchise history to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season. To cap it all off, Williams threw for 20 touchdowns.
With his ceiling being as high as it is, Johnson instantly becomes the perfect coach to guide Williams in a tough NFC North division. What Johnson was able to do in Detroit was nothing short of incredible. He is a huge reason why the standard is so high for years to come and he will hope to use that energy toward retooling a Bears franchise that is desperate for a winner.
ESPN’s Ben Solak graded out this hire as a slam-dunk for the Bears and Williams, with no better option being on the table in this coaching cycle.
“Most importantly, Johnson is the sort of powerful offensive mind who can draw the best out of Williams — the future of Bears football if he hits. A coach like Johnson makes Williams hitting all the more likely. The Bears got their guy,” Solak writes.
Caleb Williams will be pushed by Ben Johnson to be better
A big point of emphasis for Williams when this coaching search began was for the Bears to find a coach that would challenge him at all times. The 23-year-old demands greatness and knows that he has the entire city of Chicago weighing on his shoulders.
Based on Johnson’s demeanor, he should absolutely have the ability to do whatever it takes to keep Williams learning at all times. If a guy of Williams’ caliber isn’t being tested every step of the way, things won’t change and he will get complacent with his game.
Johnson is being given Williams and his running mate, Rome Odunze as they each enter their second years in the league. If the offensive mind can find a way to have those two on the same page at all times, things could get very scary for the NFC. Not to mention that DJ Moore has a chance to be properly utilized for the first time in his entire career with Johnson at the helm.
Exciting times are ahead for Bears football as the Ben Johnson era gets underway. This will be yet another massive offseason which will hopefully lead to some important games being played down the stretch this upcoming season.
