Few things matter more to Caleb Williams’ future and the Bears‘ chances of climbing out of the NFC North basement than fortifying the offensive line.
During his rookie season, Williams absorbed 68 sacks, which limited his ability to build confidence in the pocket and severely disrupted any chance for the Bears’ offense to get going in the right direction.
That could be about to change.
Could the Bears target Texas OT Kelvin Banks?
Pro Football Focus’ Jordan Plocher and Josh Liskiewitz put together a list of the “Perfect” NFL Draft fits for every team across the NFL, earmarking Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks as their selection for the Bears.
“While some of Chicago‘s pass protection issues in 2024 were certainly on rookie QB Caleb Williams (he led all QBs with 17 charged sacks and was third with 38 total pressures owned),” Plocher and Liskiewitz write for PFF. “The offensive line as a whole was clearly one of the weakest units in the entire league.
“Banks, therefore, makes perfect sense, as he was the best player on the best offensive line in college football this season. In two seasons as the Longhorns’ starting left tackle, he allowed just two sacks and three QB hits on 1,040 pass pro reps.”
Banks’ steadiness in pass protection could be a major asset both for Williams, ahead of his second NFL season, and the Bears’ offense overall.
While it’s expected that the Bears will prioritize the offensive line this offseason, Banks may prove to be the most pro-ready tackle in this class.
“Overall,” The Bleacher Report Scouting Department writes. “Banks is a skilled pass protector with good athletic ability who works effectively on combination blocks and can line up targets on the move but will fall off of blocks on longer developing plays and struggle to finish due to streaky sustain skills consistently.”
