The 2024-25 season for the Chicago Bears has been anything but normal. With Sunday’s contest in Green Bay marking the end of this unsuccessful campaign, the only place to look at Halas Hall is toward the future. The team has lost their last ten games, so there is not much to be thrilled about with the organization right now.
Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams is looking forward to his first NFL offseason
In an article from The Athletic, Caleb Williams voiced his excitement in already preparing for his second season in the NFL. The number one overall pick from the 2024 draft has seen solid success as a rookie despite not having much around him to thrive.
“This offseason’s gonna be a big offseason for me and I’m excited about it,” Williams said. I have things, maturity-wise, of playing the position that I’m excited about learning. Things are gonna take time and I’m well aware of that and OK with that, but I’m definitely going to try and push myself to exhaustion mentally and physically this offseason to be able to withstand a long season.”
It is encouraging to hear that Williams plans to attack this offseason with full force. The hopeful franchise signal-caller acknowledges the fact that not everything will be changed overnight and things will take time in his growth. It helps that Williams already has a solid wide receiver core around him that can work with him to make sure things are much different at this time next year.
The mental aspect for Williams that he mentioned is something worth noting as well. Having the franchise struggle in historic fashion while being the number-one pick in a big market certainly can’t be easy for a 23-year-old to handle. The support he has from the city of Chicago is endless at the moment but losing is something that is not easy for any player.
From a physical standpoint, Williams has taken a beating this season. Prior to Sunday, Williams has been sacked 67 times in the campaign. This is by far the most sacks taken by any quarterback this year, and it’s something that needs to change moving forward.
There is a lot of work that the Chicago Bears front office needs to do to set Caleb Williams up for success in year two
Personal reasons aside, there are other factors that Williams needs to look forward to this offseason. The Chicago Bears are set to hire a new head coach after relieving Matt Eberflus of his duties at the end of November. Having a coaching candidate available like Ben Johnson is something that fans are salivating over just thinking about what it could mean for Williams’ development.
Other options have been reported for the Chicago Bears vacancy over the past month, including Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy, Mike Vrabel, Joe Brady, and Aaron Glenn. While an offensive mind is certainly preferred to lead this team into next year, a change is culture is much needed regardless.
The Chicago Bears also have some decent draft capital and cap space entering the offseason. Where things stand right now, the organization should have three draft picks inside the top 40 and enough money open on the books to make a few moves.
The trenches should be the top priority for Ryan Poles and Kevin Warren to address with the resources they have available to them. Better protection for Williams is extremely necessary and creating a stronger pass rush unit is a needed change after the lack of production on that front over the last couple of years.
