The coaching carousel is now spinning full-speed ahead with candidates interviewing with teams across the NFL just as the NFL Playoffs are kicking off.
Some franchises, such as the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Bears got a head start on their preparations for their coaching search by firing their head coach during the season. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars are also looking for new head coaches this offseason.
While there are many reasons Chicago may not be the most desirable destination; sharing a division with legitimate Super Bowl contenders like the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, as well as the ascending Green Bay Packers, in addition to a decade’s worth of mediocre football.
At least one NFL analyst believes the Bears are the premier vacancy, and suggests candidates should be lining up to put their fingerprints on Chicago’s rebuild.
“Caleb Williams’ first season was a disappointment as a whole,” Gary Davenport writes for Bleacher/Report. “But the first pick in last year’s draft showed flashes. The talent is there, whether as a passer or an improviser.
“Williams has plenty of weapons, including wide receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore, running back D’Andre Swift and tight end Cole Kmet. T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds are among the best linebacker duos in the league. There’s talent in the secondary and on the defensive front.
“Yes, the Bears need to improve the offensive front. But the team has a top-10 pick in April’s draft and over $80 million in projected cap space. Granted, that’s not the war chest the Patriots have, but there also aren’t nearly as many holes to fill.”
There’s little question that the chance to develop a franchise quarterback such as Williams with a built-in core of weapons around him should make the Bears’ job an enviable one, especially for an offensive-minded coach.
Likewise, the Bears aren’t hampered by cap concerns over the next two seasons, which could make a turnaround just as Williams is ascending more likely.
As the Bears’ coaching search continues, it will be fascinating to see the caliber of candidates that ownership and the front office are able to get in front of during the interview process.
