The Chicago Bears will likely invest significant resources this offseason, perhaps even an early-round NFL Draft pick, into fortifying and rebuilding the offensive line in front of quarterback Caleb Williams. But, this past season, at least one offensive tackle emerged as a potential anchor moving forward.
Even though Williams had to absorb 68 sacks as a rookie, general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears likely need to add a bookend offensive tackle, but Darnell Wright has one of the tackle spots locked down, after a stellar 2024 campaign.
Pro Football Focus put together a list of each NFL team’s secret superstar from the 2024 season, including Wright.
“Discourse about how bad the Bears’ offensive line was never ceased in the Chicago area,” Bradley Locker writes for PFF. “But Wright actually turned in a strong Year 2. The former first-round pick was the Bears’ highest-graded starter on either side of the ball (79.3 overall) while playing 1,021 snaps as other offensive linemen were banged up. Wright improved both his run-blocking and pass-blocking grades by at least 14 points while registering three fewer penalties. The Bears will probably invest more along their offensive line this offseason, but right tackle appears in strong shape with Wright.”
In his second NFL season, Wright surrendered six sacks, but Pro Football Focus awarded him an 82.2 run-blocking grade. If Wright continues to make strides in pass protection, while continuing to be a road-grader, he could ultimately develop into one of the most vital players on the Bears’ offense and to Williams’ future.
