DeWayne Carter, Duke
DeWayne Carter doesn’t have an elite physical presence. He has some size at 6-foot-2, 302 pounds but is an average athletic player. However, he is an extremely smart, versatile, and consistent player. He makes the right plays and won’t hurt you with his play. While at Duke, he was a three-year captain so he has great leadership skills.
Additionally, Carter can move around along the line to add flexibility to the defense.. He does have good footwork and has an upfield mentality. He figures out a way to get into the backfield as quickly as possible. He has some quickness and burst off the snap and good hands to swat a blocker’s punch or shed a block attempt.
Carter has a high motor and active feet. He drives off the snap to leverage blockers. His hands will be key to his development at the pro level. When he gets his hands on the offensive lineman quickly, he has the strength to be disruptive. He is hard to beat with one-on-one blocks on runs. Also, he handles double-teams well and battles to give up minimal yards.
When he uses his hands well Carter can get into the blocker’s chest and provide an effective bull rush. He even has a spin move that, while not used very much, is effective when he does use it.
