The Chicago Bears drafted running back David Montgomery from Iowa State with the 73rd pick following a trade with the New England Patriots.
Chicago moved up 14 spots to draft Montgomery who was a two-time 1st team All-Big 12 recipient and rushed for 26 touchdowns during his time at Iowa State.
Montgomery is the fourth running back drafted during Ryan Pace’s tenure and fits Matt Nagy’s offense as a dual-threat running back. In his NFL Draft & Combine Profile, his comparison was former Kansas City running back Kareem Hunt.
According to NFL.com’s Draft Profile, some of Montgomery’s strengths is that he is a patient and instinctive runner, has good hands, is able to pick up blitzes, and that his compact frame compliments his workload.
One of the safest runners in this draft with a desirable combination of size, vision, toughness and creativity. He runs with impressive calm and instincts in the midst of interior mayhem, weaving and battering his way through traffic. Smart teams will recognize his ability to create yardage for himself with his eyes, footwork, contact balance and power. Should alleviate concerns about his lack of explosiveness. Montgomery has a pro-ready game and Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) value as a good NFL starter.
During his time at Iowa State, Montgomery rushed for 1,000 yards twice in three seasons and averaged 4.7 yards per carry during career. In the passing game, he averaged 29 receptions in his last two season with Cyclones.
The trade with the New England Patriots marks the second consecutive year the two teams have traded draft picks on the second night of the Draft. New England receives Chicago’s 87th selection, their fifth-round selection this year, and next year’s fourth-round selection. The Bears also get the Patriots sixth round selection this year also. Last year, the Bears traded up to draft wide receiver Anthony Miller.
The Bears will have four picks left in the 2019 NFL Draft barring any moves made tonight or Saturday. Here are the picks left: No. 126, No. 205, No. 222, No. 238
